The Nyagishiru washing station is the home base for 850 coffee-producing families in Burundi’s northeastern Muyinga Province, acting as a central hub where community, collaboration, and care converge. More than just a processing site, the station is committed to the ongoing support and flourishing of the local community, renewing aging coffee trees, providing vital resources for education and healthcare, and cultivating long-term sustainability. Farmers who deliver cherries to Nyagishiru receive a 20% premium above the market rate, while station staff are compensated nearly 60% above standard labor wages in Burundi. Even the byproducts of production are returned to the land, with coffee pulp transformed into organic compost to enrich future harvests.
In resonance with the values we hold close to our hearts, this is a place where people come together in mutual support, circling the wagons around collective prosperity.
Similar to some of the other Burundis we’ve featured, this coffee is naturally processed, which means the whole cherries are dried in the sun without intervention of water or machines. This traditional process allows for a more authentic flavor profile.
We can taste the love! Each sip is a blast to the past, a mouthwatering menagerie of jammy sweetness and berry-esque acidity nostalgic of Trix cereal, and this one isn’t just for kids!
